How can someone want to hunt for this deer (payau)? As you can see in this picture, the payau is in love with me and kissing me. Hehehehehe.... I read a news about how Government officers become Illegal hunter in Sabah. The news by Sabah Daily Express said government officers have also been gunning down wildlife illegally in the forests of Sabah. Wildlife Department Director, Dr Laurentius Ambu, said this was discovered at recent roadblocks, groundwork and investigations carried out by the department.
"We have identified government officers of various departments who are actually hunting illegally in certain prohibited areas," he revealed.
He would be writing to inform department heads about the matter and urged them to take necessary action.
"None was compounded or brought to court yet because we always manage to stop them before they enter their designated poaching spots," he said, adding these officers even brought dogs in some cases.
Laurentius warned that anyone found hunting illegally would have taken action against them under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 which provides for fines up to RM50,000 or jail terms of up to five years, or both. He said only those with a "hunting or sports" purpose gun licence are allowed to hunt whereas those with guns licensed under the "farming" category are prohibited from hunting.
"Another licence must also be obtained from the department, stating what animals you wish to hunt and how many you want to hunt, whereby a fee needs to be paid according to the type of animal chosen and the number of animals to hunt."
The department, Laurentius added, has also started making use of camera traps in hotspots such as entrances to forest reserves and plantation areas, to identify and capture culprits.
"So far we have identified certain individuals in Paitan and we are currently working with the police on this," he said, adding that three wild boars were found shot dead without a permit in this case.
This illegal hunting happen almost everyday in my workplace area. I think the problem most probably because of no enforcement on this illegal hunting. I never heard anyone of this illegal hunter been caught in the act by Wildlife Department. The department also need to educate people on how illegal hunting will make our wildlife decreasing at a fast rate.
No chayo-chayo day today....
