One of Sabah agriculture product is Ikan Masin or Salted Fish. Its also one of my favourite food. I will normally go to Sunday Kota Marudu Tamu (Morning Market) and buy my fresh Ikan Masin. I love to buy Ikan layar (sail fish) salted fish. Most of the time, I just deep fry the fish and eat them with lime juice and chili. You will forget how much rice you have been eaten if you like Ikan masin too much, like me. Hehehehehe....
At my workplace, it is hard to buy fresh fish or any red meat since I cannot keep them in refrigerator. Our only main source of electricity is come from big generator sets using diesel and its not on for 24 hours. That is not a problem since I don't like red meat. I can get fresh vegetables from my backyard vegetable garden.
Salted fish or ikan masin is one of the oldest ways to preserve fresh fish in order to prevent them from decaying. Before refrigeration technique was invented, fish and other seafood were cured in salt or salt water. Other than preserving the fish with brine, dried fish is also very popular. The fish are gutted, sprinkled heavily with coarse sea salt and then left to dry on the beach in the hot sun for several days. The result is desiccated fish, free of moisture, which can be kept for months to be made later into many kinds of food.
In the Tamu, beside fish I can found Ikan bilis (anchovies), dried prawn, octopus (I wish this is paul-the octopus), jellyfish, mussels and scallops. Their price are cheaper here compare to Kota Kinabalu. Most of the dried and salted fish came from Kudat, Tawau or Sandakan. Some of this fish product also exported to other countries.
Any of you also like to eat Ikan Masin? Nyum-nyum.... Maybe will eat this for my Sahur today. Ehehehehe....
Chayo-chayo....

dah lama x makan ikan masin. huhuhu
Hello Zezebel, wow! Love your these pics and interesting posting.
I have always loved salted fish, ikan kurau as well that thorny ikan sepat from padi fields.
I guess when we were young, parents not much money, it was salted fish very often as it was very cheap or 'poor man's food' then.
I love ikan bilis, dried sotong too.
I can guess you must be a fabulous gourmet cook.....
And till today I love them, add sambal belachan....habis cherita! Two large plates of rice, tentu lichin, ha ha.
And I love chillie padi too.
Zezebel, when you cook the salted fish or ikan bilis, send me telegram, love to see your Sabah style cooking. If nearby I sure will hint for a dinner invitation, ha ha.
You have fun, stay young and keep a song in your heart, Lee.
We have the same kinds of dried fish and shrimps here in the Philippines. Plus dried squid. I love them. Eat them with scrambled eggs and fried rice for breakfast. Yum!
hye zezebel...
i went to Sabah about 1 month ago, i visited kudat, tawau, semporna, and sandakan.
I noticed that Sabah is very rich with fisheries product's more than other countries in Malaysia.
